The AAMS Mourns the Loss of One of the Founding Fathers Dr. Misak Barsamian

Remembering Dr. Misak Barsamian

The Armenian American Medical Society mourns the loss of one of its founding fathers and first president, Dr. Misak Barsamian, who passed away recently. Born in Aleppo, Syria, in 1937, Dr. Barsamian’s career was as distinguished as it was dedicated to the advancement of healthcare and the Armenian community.

After receiving his medical degree from the American University of Beirut, Dr. Barsamian served the communities in Beirut, Lebanon, through his private practice in obstetrics and gynecology, where he also founded the Barsamian Hospital. Dr. Barsamian served as an executive committee member of the Lebanese-Armenian Medical Society from 1969 to 1971. In 1978, Dr. Barsamian embarked on a new chapter, immigrating to Los Angeles and establishing a thriving private practice.

Dr. Barsamian’s legacy, however, extends far beyond his medical achievements. He played a pivotal role in creating a vibrant network of Armenian American medical professionals dedicated to advancing healthcare and fostering a sense of community. His leadership in organizing the Fourth Armenian Medical World Congress in Los Angeles in 1987 further solidified his position as a driving force in the Armenian American medical community.

Beyond his medical contributions, Dr. Barsamian was deeply involved in community service. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for the Holy Martyrs Armenian Apostolic Church and Ferrahian High School and later served as Chairman of the Board of Trustees of St. Garabed Armenian Apostolic Church of Hollywood.

Dr. Barsamian is survived by his wife, Rita, daughters Karina and Astrid, and grandchildren Solair and Remy.

The Armenian American Medical Society extends its heartfelt condolences to Dr. Barsamian’s family, friends, and all who were touched by his remarkable life. His legacy of care, compassion, and community service will continue to inspire and influence generations to come.

You are invited to attend a church service honoring Dr. Barsamian’s life and legacy on May 17th at 6:00 p.m. at St. Garabed Armenian Apostolic Church, 1614 Alexandria Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90027.

Those who wish to pay their respects to the family may do so at the Kargodorian’s residence 22410 Annepe Way, Chatsworth CA 91311, on May 10th from 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. or May 11th from 3 – 6 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, Dr. Barsamian’s wish was to continue contributing to women’s health by supporting the Armenian Relief Society Mother and Child Akhuryan Birthing Center and the AGBU Hye Geen Pregnant Women’s Centers. The family will also donate to these charities in lieu of a reception, ensuring that his legacy of compassion and care continues to touch lives for years to come.
