In 2020, the COVID-19 pandemic created an overwhelming demand for medical oxygen, and existing equipment struggled to meet needs due to frequent disruptions in the operation of the old cryogen station. The Armenian American Medical Society (AAMS) collaborated with member organizations of the Armenian Medical International Committee to establish a new cryogenic oxygen generation plant at the Alikhanyan National Science Laboratory (Yerevan Physics Institute) in Armenia.
On May 23, 2021, the AAMS held its “Breath of Life” event to support this critical project. Once again, AAMS members and supporters rallied to raise sufficient funds to see the project through to completion. The resulting state-of-the-art facility, which opened in June 2021, will produce liquid oxygen for the entire country in all sectors for at least fifty years, including healthcare, research, and the military.
